The struggle and strife behind Steven Bradbury's win at Salt Lake City(ABC Radio - Conversations)

In 2002, Australia won its first gold medal at a Winter Olympics.

Brisbane's Steven Bradbury was the rank outsider in the five-man final of the 1000m short-track speed skating.

Steven was up against the best in the world, including American superstar Anton Ohno.

Throughout the race he kept his distance at the back of the pack.

On the final lap, his four rivals slipped, crashed, and went spinning wildly across the ice.

Steven glided past them across the finish line to claim the gold medal.

His unexpected win has entered the lexicon as 'doing a Bradbury'.

But Steven had battled injury, financial strain and a near-death experience to even make it to the event
